MT4 vs MT5 for Gold Trading
Compare MT4 and MT5 for gold trading. Which platform is better for XAUUSD? Feature comparison, pros and cons.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways

- 01
Core Differences
MT5 has more timeframes (21 vs 9), more order types, and a built-in economic calendar. MT4 is simpler and more widely used for gold.
- 02
Charting and Analysis
MT5 offers more indicators and graphical objects. MT4 has a larger library of custom indicators from the community.
- 03
Backtesting
MT5 has superior backtesting with multi-currency and multi-thread support. MT4 backtesting is single-core and less accurate.
- 04
Broker Support
MT4 is more widely supported by gold brokers. Some brokers offer MT5 as a premium option with additional features.
- 05
Gold-Specific Custom Indicators
MT4 has thousands of community-built gold indicators. MT5 has fewer but offers MQL5 advanced tools including custom hedging systems and Martingale calculators.
- 06
Hedging Support
MT4 supports hedging natively (multiple positions on same symbol). MT5 requires a hedge-capable broker account. For gold traders who hedge, MT4 is simpler.
- 07
Advanced Order Types
MT5 offers Buy Stop Limit and Sell Stop Limit orders — useful for gold breakout trading. MT4 lacks these. If you trade breakouts frequently, MT5 gives you more precision.
MT4 vs MT5 for Gold Trading
Both platforms are excellent for gold trading, but they have distinct differences.
Platform Comparison
MT4 Advantages:
- More brokers support it
- Larger custom indicator library
- Simpler, lighter interface
- More community resources
MT5 Advantages:
- More timeframes (21 vs 9)
- Better backtesting engine
- Built-in economic calendar
- More order types (Buy Stop Limit, Sell Stop Limit)
Recommendation
For most gold traders, MT4 is the better choice due to wider broker support and community resources. If you need advanced backtesting, choose MT5.
MT4 Custom Indicators for Gold
MT4 has an unmatched library of custom indicators. Popular gold-specific ones include: Gold Sessions indicator (shows Asian/London/NY session times), Gold ATR indicator (plots current gold volatility), GoldPip (shows pip value directly on chart). Installation: download .ex4 file, copy to MT4/Indicators folder, restart MT4.
Hedging Gold Positions: MT4 vs MT5
Many gold traders hedge — taking both long and short positions simultaneously to lock in profits or reduce risk. MT4 allows this by default (just open another trade in the opposite direction). MT5 requires a broker account specifically configured for hedging, which not all brokers support. Check your broker before committing to MT5 for hedging.
Advanced Orders for Gold Breakouts
MT5's Buy Stop Limit and Sell Stop Limit orders are powerful for gold breakout trading. You can set an order that triggers only if price surpasses a level AND then retraces to a specific entry point. This catches breakouts that retest before continuing — a common gold price action pattern that MT4 traders must monitor manually.
I don't predict. I prepare. Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.
— Happy trading, Lin
