TradingView vs MT5 for Gold Trading: Which Should You Use (and Can You Use Both)?
Charting, order execution, broker access, automation and cost compared for XAUUSD traders, with a practical set-up that uses each platform for what it does best.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.

Most gold traders end up using both: TradingView for charts and analysis, MetaTrader 5 for placing and managing trades. Whether you need both depends on how you trade and which broker you use.
The short answer
- TradingView has the better charts, drawing tools, alerts and community scripts, and runs in a browser.
- MT5 is the platform most brokers provide for execution, with deep order management and automated trading through Expert Advisors (EAs).
- You can trade directly from TradingView only if your broker is integrated with it.
Side by side
| TradingView | MT5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Charts and drawing tools | Excellent; many chart types, clean interface | Good; functional, dated look |
| Alerts | Flexible, on price, indicators and drawings; delivered to phone and email | Basic price alerts |
| Trading | Through integrated brokers only | Through any MT5 broker |
| Automation | Pine Script for indicators and strategies; alerts can trigger external tools | MQL5 Expert Advisors run trades automatically |
| Price data | Shows the data feed you choose; may differ from your broker | Your broker's own prices |
| Cost | Free plan with limits; paid plans for more indicators and alerts | Free from your broker |
| Devices | Browser, desktop, mobile | Desktop (Windows; Mac via the broker's version), mobile, web |
The price-feed issue
On TradingView, the XAUUSD chart you see may come from a data provider or a different broker. Your broker's prices can differ by tens of cents, and its spread is not shown. Two consequences:
- Levels drawn on TradingView may be slightly off on your broker's chart.
- A stop placed by eye on TradingView may trigger at a different moment at your broker.
If your broker is integrated, select its feed so the chart matches your execution prices.
A practical set-up
- Analysis TradingView, using your broker's feed if available. Mark levels and set alerts; see TradingView alerts for gold.
- Execution MT5, using pending orders and pre-set stops; see how to set SL and TP in MT5.
- Record your trading journal, including the gap between alert price and fill price.
How to choose a broker for this
Our rating has a list of brokers you can trade through from TradingView and a list of MT5 gold brokers. Check the entity for your country on each broker's profile.
Questions traders ask
Is MT4 still worth using? Many brokers still offer it and many traders still prefer it. For a new set-up, MT5 has more order types and better back-testing. See MT4 vs MT5 for gold.
Can I run an EA on TradingView? Not in the MT5 sense. Pine Script strategies are mostly for back-testing and alerts; live automation needs a broker integration or an external bridge.
Why does my TradingView gold price differ from MT5? Different data source and no broker spread on the TradingView chart. Switch the chart to your broker's feed if you can.
I don't predict. I prepare. Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.
— Happy trading, Lin
