XAUUSD, GOLD, XAUUSD.m, XAUUSD+: Why Your Gold Symbol Looks Different and What the Suffix Means
Why brokers name gold XAUUSD, GOLD or XAUUSD.m, what suffixes usually mean, how to find the right symbol in MT4/MT5, and why EAs break on the wrong one.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.

- Right-click the symbol → Specification. Confirm:
- An Expert Advisor coded for "XAUUSD" will not trade "XAUUSD.m" unless it handles suffixes.
- Is GOLD the same as XAUUSD? Often yes, but at some brokers GOLD is a futures-based CFD. Check the specification.
Download MT5 from three brokers and you might find gold listed as XAUUSD, GOLD and XAUUSD.m. They are all spot gold against the US dollar. The differences come from how each broker organises its accounts.
What the names usually mean
| Symbol | Common meaning |
|---|---|
| XAUUSD | The standard name: gold (XAU) priced in US dollars |
| GOLD | The same instrument with a friendlier name; some brokers also use it for a futures-based CFD |
| XAUUSD.m, XAUUSDm | Often a mini or micro account, or a specific account type |
| XAUUSD.pro, XAUUSD.raw, XAUUSD.ecn | Often the raw-spread or professional account version |
| XAUUSD+ , XAUUSD# , XAUUSD_i | Account-type or server tags; meanings vary by broker |
| XAUEUR, XAUJPY | Gold priced in euros or yen |
| GC, GOLDDEC26 and similar | A futures CFD tracking a specific COMEX contract month |
Suffixes are broker-specific. Always check the contract specification rather than guessing.
How to find the right symbol
MT5: In Market Watch, right-click → Symbols, then search for "XAU" or "gold". Select the one that matches your account type and click Show.
MT4: Right-click Market Watch → Show All, or → Symbols and browse the Metals or Commodities group.
If none appears, the account may not have gold enabled; see XAUUSD not showing in MT4.
Check the specification, not the name
Right-click the symbol → Specification. Confirm:
- Contract size usually 100 ounces per lot. Some brokers use other sizes, which changes your profit per dollar.
- Digits 2 or 3 decimal places.
- Underlying spot or a futures contract month.
Our guide to reading the XAUUSD contract specification goes through every field.
Why the name matters for EAs and signals
- An Expert Advisor coded for "XAUUSD" will not trade "XAUUSD.m" unless it handles suffixes.
- Copy-trading and signal services map symbols between accounts; a wrong mapping means no trades or the wrong instrument.
- Position sizing tools assume a contract size; if your broker's gold is 10 ounces per lot instead of 100, sizes from a standard calculator are ten times too big. The lot size calculator assumes 100 ounces; check your specification.
Questions traders ask
Is GOLD the same as XAUUSD? Often yes, but at some brokers GOLD is a futures-based CFD. Check the specification.
Why are there two gold symbols on my account? Usually one for each account type the server supports, or one spot and one futures CFD. Use the one that matches your account.
Does the suffix change the price? It can change the spread and commission, because it often reflects a different account type.
I don't predict. I prepare. Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.
