MT4 "Invalid Account" Error: Causes and Fixes

MT4 shows "Invalid account" when the login, password or server does not match. Check the server name first, then the password type, then whether a demo account has expired.

MT4 shows "Invalid account" when the login number, password and server do not match. The most common cause is the wrong server: check the exact server name in the account email from your broker, select it in the login window, and log in again.

Check these in order

  1. Server name. File → Login to Trade Account, then pick the server exactly as written in the account email (for example, a "Live" and a "Demo" server are different). If it is not in the list, type the broker's name in the server box and press Enter to search.
  2. Login number. Use the MT4 account number, not your email address or client portal ID.
  3. Password type. The master (trading) password can place trades. The investor password logs in read-only. If you reset one, the other does not change.
  4. Expired demo. Many brokers delete demo accounts after 30 days without activity. Open a new demo account.
  5. Account not activated yet. Live accounts are sometimes created only after verification or a first deposit. Check the client portal for the account status.
  6. Wrong platform. An MT5 account cannot log in to MT4, and the reverse. Download the matching platform from the MT4 page or the MT5 page.

"No connection" is a different error

"No connection" or "Common error" usually means the server cannot be reached: a network problem, a firewall, or an outdated server list. Rescan servers (right-click the server list → Rescan servers) or reinstall the broker's own MT4 build.

FAQ

Why does MT4 say invalid account on my phone but works on my computer?

The phone app is usually on a different server in the server search. Search for the broker name and pick the exact server from your account email.

Can I log in with my email instead of the account number?

No. MT4 accepts only the numeric login of the trading account.

I reset my password and still get invalid account. Why?

You may have reset the investor password, or the reset has not reached the trading server yet. Wait a few minutes, then try the master password from the reset email.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn this?

Most beginners grasp the basics in 2–4 weeks of focused practice. Expect 3–6 months of consistent trading before results become consistent. Start with a demo account.

Do I need a special broker to trade gold?

No. Any regulated broker that offers XAUUSD works. Choose one whose licence you can verify on the regulator's website, and avoid unregulated offshore brokers.

What is the minimum capital to start?

You can open an account with $100–$500, but that is closer to practice money. For real trading, aim for $1,000 or more so you can keep risk to about 1% per trade.

Is price action better than indicators?

Price action strips out the noise; indicators lag. Many traders move to pure price action after years of indicator-based trading because it is cleaner and faster to react to.
