XAUUSD Not Showing in MT4? How to Find Gold in Market Watch
If XAUUSD is missing in MT4, it is usually hidden in Market Watch or named differently (GOLD, XAUUSD.m). Right-click Market Watch, choose Symbols, search and show it.

If gold is missing in MT4, it is almost always hidden in Market Watch or listed under another name such as GOLD or XAUUSD.m. Right-click inside Market Watch, choose Symbols (Ctrl+U on desktop), search for "XAU" or "GOLD", select it and click Show.
Desktop (Windows and Mac)
- Open Market Watch with Ctrl+M (or View → Market Watch).
- Right-click inside the list and choose Show All. If gold appears, drag it onto a chart.
- If it still does not appear, right-click again, choose Symbols, open the Metals (or CFD) folder, select the gold symbol and click Show.
Mobile (Android and iPhone)
- Open the Quotes tab.
- Tap the + icon.
- Search for "XAU" or "GOLD" and tap the symbol to add it.
Why gold may still be missing
- Different symbol name. Brokers add suffixes for account types: XAUUSD.m, XAUUSD.pro, XAUUSDc, GOLD#. Search for "XAU" rather than the full name.
- Account type without metals. Some cent or forex-only accounts do not include gold. The symbol list will not show it at all; ask the broker which account type includes XAUUSD.
- Logged in to the wrong server. If the account is on a demo server and you log in to the live one (or the reverse), the symbol list can differ. Check the server name in your account email.
- The broker only offers gold on MT5. Some brokers have moved new accounts to MetaTrader 5. Download links for both platforms are on the MT4 download page and the MT5 download page.

What is the gold symbol in MT4?
Usually XAUUSD. Some brokers use GOLD, or XAUUSD with a suffix such as .m or .pro, depending on the account type.
Why can I see gold but not trade it?
The market may be closed (the daily break or the weekend), or the account type may be view-only for that symbol. A greyed-out order button usually means the market is closed.
Does XAUUSD.m have a different price?
The price follows the same market, but spreads and commissions can differ between account types. Check the contract specification (right-click the symbol → Specification).

Most beginners grasp the basics in 2–4 weeks of focused practice. Expect 3–6 months of consistent trading before results become consistent. Start with a demo account.
Do I need a special broker to trade gold?
No. Any regulated broker that offers XAUUSD works. Choose one whose licence you can verify on the regulator's website, and avoid unregulated offshore brokers.
What is the minimum capital to start?
You can open an account with $100–$500, but that is closer to practice money. For real trading, aim for $1,000 or more so you can keep risk to about 1% per trade.
Is price action better than indicators?
Price action strips out the noise; indicators lag. Many traders move to pure price action after years of indicator-based trading because it is cleaner and faster to react to.
