Triple Swap Day on Gold: Why You Pay Three Nights of Interest at Once
Why brokers charge three nights of swap once a week, which day it falls on for XAUUSD, how to find it in MT4/MT5, and what it adds to holding costs.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.

If you hold a gold position overnight, you pay (or sometimes receive) a swap each night at the daily rollover. Once a week, most brokers charge three nights at once. Swing traders who hold gold for days notice it; scalpers rarely do.
Why triple swap exists
Interest accrues every calendar day, including Saturday and Sunday, but the market is closed at weekends. Rather than charge on days with no rollover, brokers charge the weekend's two extra days on one weekday.
For currency pairs, that day is usually Wednesday. This follows from spot FX settling two business days after the trade: a position held through Wednesday's rollover settles over the weekend.
For gold and other metals, brokers differ. Many charge triple swap on Wednesday, as for currencies; some charge it on Friday. You cannot assume.
How to find your broker's triple-swap day
In MT5: right-click XAUUSD in Market Watch, choose Specification, and look for "3-days swap", which names the day.
In MT4: the contract specification shows swap long and swap short; the triple-swap day may be listed in the broker's swap or instrument page rather than in the platform.
Also check the swap amounts themselves: they change as interest rates change.
How much it costs
Suppose the swap on a gold long is −6 dollars per lot per night (an illustrative figure; check yours).
| Days held (Mon to Fri, triple on Wed) | Nights charged | Cost per lot |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Tuesday | 1 | 6 dollars |
| Monday to Thursday | 1 + 1 + 3 = 5 | 30 dollars |
| One full week | 7 | 42 dollars |
For a swing trade aiming for a 20-dollar move (2,000 dollars per lot), a week of swaps is minor. For a trade aiming for 3 dollars (300 dollars per lot), it can take a meaningful share.
Three practical rules
- Know the day. If you are going to close a position on Wednesday anyway, closing before the rollover saves three nights.
- Include swaps in your risk-reward. The risk-reward calculator shows the trade; add swaps for the expected holding period.
- Check swap-free terms carefully if you use an Islamic account: what swap-free gold accounts really cost.
Questions traders ask
Can a gold swap be positive? For shorts, sometimes, depending on interest rates and the broker's markup. Longs usually pay.
What time is the rollover? Usually 5 p.m. New York time, which is midnight on many brokers' server clocks.
Do I pay swap if I open and close within the same day? No. Swap is charged only on positions open at the rollover.
I don't predict. I prepare. Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.
— Happy trading, Lin
