Lesson 8 | 1.382 Measures Strength: Reaching It Is Strong, Missing It Is Weak
Rhythm Trading, Lesson 8. 1.382 also measures strength: up-pullback-up that reaches 1.382 is strong, so look to buy the pullback; missing it is weak, so wait. 1.382 and 1.618 form the target zone.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways
- If up-pullback-up reaches 1.382 the move is strong: wait for the pullback and buy. If it misses, the move is weak: don't act yet.
In one sentence
If up-pullback-up reaches 1.382 the move is strong: wait for the pullback and buy. If it misses, the move is weak: don't act yet.
Four cases
| Case | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Up-pullback-up reaches 1.382 | Strong | Wait for D to pull back to E; look to buy near support |
| Up-pullback-up misses 1.382 | Weak | Be patient: it may range or turn down |
| Down-bounce-down reaches 1.382 | Strong fall | Wait for the bounce to E; look to sell near resistance |
| Down-bounce-down misses 1.382 | Weak fall | Don't chase the short |
An analogy
The qualifying mark in a long-jump competition. Clear it and the athlete has shown real ability; the next jump is worth watching. Miss it and you don't back them yet. 1.382 is that mark.
1.382 is also a target
1.382 and 1.618 make a target zone.
- After entering, the first target is 1.382.
- The second target is 1.618.
- Most of the time, 1.382 is enough.
For example, once a down-bounce-down seedling is confirmed and you sell near E, the first target below is that leg's 1.382.
Where to enter on the pullback
After D touches 1.382, price (in an uptrend) pulls back to look for support. Lessons 11 and 12 show how to find that support with rhythm lines. For now remember two things.
- Only consider buying the pullback after 1.382 has been touched. If it hasn't, don't trade.
- Use a lower timeframe to find a reversal for the entry: enter if the 1-hour turns, wait if it doesn't; in a fall, look for the downward path on the 5-minute.
The most common mistakes
- Chasing while D runs toward 1.382. The stop is too far away. The right place is the pullback.
- Trading when it missed. No model, no trade. No trade beats a losing trade.
- Greedy targets. Before thinking about 1.618, make sure you've banked the move to 1.382.
Explain it in your own words
- If up-pullback-up misses 1.382, what does it mean and what should you do?
- Which target is 1.382 and which is 1.618?
- Why not chase while D is heading toward 1.382?
Practice
Take the six ABCD structures from last lesson. Label those that touched 1.382 "strong" and those that didn't "weak". Scroll forward: did the strong ones keep going? What happened to the weak ones?
