Lesson 10 | Strength Lines: The Line Without a 1.382
Rhythm Trading, Lesson 10. A pullback point not followed by a 1.382 touch can still be measured, but it gives a strength line: treat it as resistance only, never as a guide to direction. Use it with a channel, plus the "three gates" pattern.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways
- A pullback point where D never touched 1.382 still gives you a line, but it is only a strength line: use it as resistance, not to decide direction.
In one sentence
A pullback point where D never touched 1.382 still gives you a line, but it is only a strength line: use it as resistance, not to decide direction.
How it differs from a rhythm line
| Rhythm line | Strength line | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | A valid point (1.382 reached) | A pullback point without a 1.382 touch |
| Acts as resistance | Yes | Yes |
| Decides direction | Yes (reaching it or not decides direction) | No |
Add a channel
When there's no valid point and the structure is unclear, a channel helps.
- Uptrend: connect two highs, then draw a parallel line from a low (high-high plus low).
- Downtrend: connect two lows, then draw a parallel line from a high (low-low plus high).
The channel is only an aid to reading the market. Your trades still follow the system.
Three gates
A common pattern when price crosses lines: it usually doesn't get past the third. When the first and second lines don't hold, the third and fourth tend to be stronger.
An analogy
A strength line is a speed bump: you feel it when you drive over, but it doesn't change where you're going. A rhythm line is the traffic light at a junction: it decides which way you go next.
The most common mistakes
- Using a strength line as a rhythm line. Deciding the direction has changed because price touched a strength line.
- Watching strength lines and ignoring the bigger structure. Strength lines appear mostly when structure is unclear, which is exactly when the higher timeframe matters most.
Explain it in your own words
- What is the biggest difference between a strength line and a rhythm line?
- How do you draw a downtrend channel?
- What does "three gates" describe?
Practice
On the gold 4-hour chart find two pullbacks that were not followed by a 1.382 touch. Draw their strength lines and a channel, then scroll forward and watch how price reacts at each.
