Lesson 9 | Three Conditions for a Valid Point
Rhythm Trading, Lesson 9. A valid point is the lowest (highest) point of a pullback (bounce) that meets three conditions: a fractal or three or more candles, followed by a touch of 1.382, and if unclear, check one timeframe lower. It is the root of the rhythm.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways
- A valid point is C in ABCD. It has to meet three conditions to count, and without it there is no rhythm line.
In one sentence
A valid point is C in ABCD. It has to meet three conditions to count, and without it there is no rhythm line.
Three conditions
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1. A fractal | Three candles with no inside relationship, the middle one lowest (or highest); or a pullback of three or more candles (the loose form) |
| 2. 1.382 reached | The following D must touch 1.382 of BC; only then is C confirmed |
| 3. If unclear, go lower | If the fractal isn't clear, look one timeframe lower |
What a fractal is
Look at three candles together. In a bottom fractal the middle candle has the lowest low and the candles either side are higher; a top fractal is the reverse. "No inside relationship" means one candle's high and low don't completely cover another's. Bonus Lesson 5 goes deeper into bottom fractals.
How to go one timeframe lower
If a pullback on the 4-hour has only two candles, not enough for three, switch to the 1-hour; if the 1-hour still has only two, look at the 30-minute. A pullback that doesn't count on the daily can count on the 4-hour or 1-hour.
An analogy
A valid point is like a foundation pile. Once the pile is driven in, you press on it (1.382) to confirm it can take the load before building on it. The pile itself must go in straight (the fractal), and if you can't see clearly, you look closer (the lower timeframe).
What a valid point does
- It is the root of the rhythm. Each valid point has its own rhythm line (Lesson 11).
- In an uptrend, once C is valid, the next pullback from D to E has a support to buy against.
- In a downtrend, once C is valid, a bounce toward E has a resistance to sell against.
The most common mistakes
- Calling every low a valid point. A low not followed by a 1.382 touch is not a valid point (Lesson 10 covers what it is).
- Forcing it with too few candles. Two candles aren't enough; go lower.
- Mixing timeframes. A valid point found on the 1-hour belongs to the 1-hour rhythm.
Explain it in your own words
- What are the three conditions for a valid point?
- The 4-hour pullback has only two candles. What do you do?
- Why is there no rhythm line without a valid point?
Practice
Go back to the ABCD structures from Lesson 7. Zoom into each C and check all three conditions. For any that fail, try one timeframe lower.
