Lesson 13 | Redefining the Trend: Watch Where Pullbacks Stop, Not Just Highs and Lows
Rhythm Trading, Lesson 13. An uptrend is pullbacks stopping at ever-higher proportions; a downtrend is bounces stopping at ever-lower proportions. 1.382 reached means continuation, missed means a likely turn; when the proportion stops improving, it's a range.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways
- An uptrend is each pullback stopping higher than the last; a downtrend is each bounce stopping lower than the last.
In one sentence
An uptrend is each pullback stopping higher than the last; a downtrend is each bounce stopping lower than the last.
The old definition and the new one
| Common definition | Rhythm trading | |
|---|---|---|
| Uptrend | Higher highs, higher lows | Pullbacks stop at ever-higher proportions |
| Downtrend | Lower highs, lower lows | Bounces stop at ever-lower proportions |
The difference is that we watch proportions. Up-pullback-up forms a seedling and B to C retraces a certain proportion. After D, price pulls back to E; if that pullback is a smaller proportion and stays short of C's line, price keeps pushing up. The uptrend is intact.
Continuation, range, reversal
| State | How to spot it |
|---|---|
| Continuation | 1.382 is reached during the swings |
| Likely turn | 1.382 is missed |
| Range | The pullback (bounce) proportion stops improving, gets bigger than before, and the line breaks |
| Reversal | Key resistance plus trend exhaustion (from Lesson 15 on) |
Treat it as a range first. To confirm a reversal, wait for down-bounce-down (or up-pullback-up) in the opposite direction to reach 1.382.
An analogy
Climbing stairs. If every step lands higher than the last, you're going up. If one step lands lower than the last, you've stopped: maybe for a rest (a range), maybe to head down (a reversal).
Timeframe rule
Higher timeframes dominate lower ones; lower timeframes build into higher ones. A 4-hour range may be a full fall and rise on the 1-hour. Before judging a trend, say which timeframe you're looking at.
The most common mistakes
- Watching only highs and lows. A new high with ever-deeper pullbacks is a weakening trend.
- Calling a reversal after one deep pullback. Treat it as a range first and wait for a seedling in the other direction.
- Not naming the timeframe. The daily can be rising while the 1-hour falls.
Explain it in your own words
- How does rhythm trading define an uptrend?
- A pullback is deeper than before and breaks the line. What do you treat it as first?
- What do you need to confirm a reversal?
Practice
On the gold daily chart, find an uptrend that lasted more than a month. Write the proportion of each pullback on the chart. Are they getting smaller, and where do they start getting bigger?
