When Does Gold Move? XAUUSD Volatility by Hour and Session, and What It Means for Your Strategy
Gold's typical intraday rhythm across the Asian, London and New York sessions, the hours with the most and least movement, and how to match your strategy to them.
I wrote this guide based on how I actually trade gold. No theory — just what works after 10 years.
Key takeaways
- | Time (New York) | Session | Typical behaviour |
- 1. Open the volatility tool to see gold's current ATR.
- Range strategies suit the Asian session. See range trading gold.

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day, but it does not move evenly. Most of the day's range usually comes in a few hours. Knowing which hours they are tells you when to trade, when to stand aside and how wide your stops need to be.
The daily rhythm (New York time)
| Time (New York) | Session | Typical behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. | Asia | Quieter, ranges often form; spikes on Chinese or Japanese news |
| 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. | London | Volume rises; first real moves of the day, often breaking the Asian range |
| 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. | London and New York overlap | Usually the most active period; US data at 8:30 a.m. |
| 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. | New York afternoon | Activity fades; Fed events at 2 p.m. on meeting days |
| Around 5 p.m. | Daily rollover | Thin; spreads widen briefly |
The exact hours shift in local time when daylight saving changes, and the US and UK change clocks on different dates for a few weeks each year.
How to see it for yourself
- Open the volatility tool to see gold's current ATR.
- On a 1-hour chart, note the range of each hourly candle for two weeks.
- Average by hour. You will see the London open and the US morning stand out.
Matching strategy to time
- Range strategies suit the Asian session. See range trading gold.
- Breakout strategies suit the London open and the first hour after US data. See London session gold.
- Trend continuation suits the overlap, when liquidity is deepest.
- Event trades belong to specific minutes; see trading gold around NFP and FOMC days.
Stops should change with the hour
A stop that is comfortable during Asia can be too tight at 8:30 a.m. New York. If you use volatility-based stops, measure ATR on the time frame you trade and expect it to be larger in the overlap. Size down accordingly with the position size calculator.
The hours to be careful with
- The first minutes after major releases spreads widen, slippage rises.
- The daily rollover see why spreads spike at 5 p.m. New York.
- Friday afternoon New York and holiday sessions: thin liquidity.
Questions traders ask
What is the single best hour to trade gold? For most traders, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. New York, when London and New York are both open. Best for you depends on your strategy and your own time zone.
Is the Asian session worth trading? Yes for range traders and those who live there. Expect smaller moves and size targets accordingly.
Why is gold quiet before big releases? Traders wait for the number. Quiet pre-release markets often break sharply afterwards.
I don't predict. I prepare. Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.
— Happy trading, Lin
