Many gold traders have a story about a stop-loss hit at five past five in the afternoon, New York time, on a quiet day with no news. The price did not really move. The spread did.

What happens at 5 p.m. New York

Around 5 p.m. New York time, the trading day rolls over:

  • Banks and liquidity providers close their books for the day and reopen for the next.
  • The CME's gold futures market pauses for its daily maintenance break, so a major reference market is shut for an hour.
  • Brokers apply overnight swaps to open positions.

For a few minutes, fewer participants are quoting prices, and those who are quote wider. The bid and ask move apart, sometimes by several times their normal distance.

How it stops you out

A sell stop on a long position is triggered by the bid. If the spread widens from 0.30 to 2.00 dollars, the bid can drop more than a dollar below where it was, even if the mid-price does not move. A tight stop placed just below the market can trigger.

The same applies to a buy stop on a short, triggered by the ask moving up.

How wide does it get?

It varies by broker and day. Thin holiday sessions and Friday evenings are often worse. Measure yours: record the spread at 4:55, 5:00, 5:05 and 5:15 p.m. New York for a week. The routine is in how to measure your gold spread.

Rules that avoid most rollover stop-outs

  1. Keep stops wider than the rollover spread, or move tight stops further away before 5 p.m.
  2. Don't open new positions in the 15 minutes either side of rollover.
  3. Check your broker's server time. Many brokers set their server clock so that midnight is 5 p.m. New York; the rollover then appears at 00:00 on the chart.
  4. Remember daylight saving. The rollover follows New York time, so in your local time it shifts when the US clocks change.

Questions traders ask

Is my broker hunting my stop? Rollover widening affects every market participant and is visible across brokers. A stop hit only at rollover, only on the bid, with no move in the mid-price, is the classic signature.

Does every broker have a daily break for gold? Many CFD brokers pause gold trading for a short period around the rollover, mirroring the futures market. Check the trading hours in your contract specification.

Should I close all positions before rollover? Not necessarily; swing traders hold through it every day. Just make sure your stops are not inside the likely spread.
