07:22 print: spot gold 4,062.7, +3.16% on the day, a 143-dollar move off the 3,919.63 low from yesterday's open.
Don't file this under "safe haven" and move on. Break it down: DXY around 101.2 (-0.58%, a one-month low), 10-year Treasury yield back to 4.936%, WTI -8.29% dragging inflation expectations down with it. Three things stacked, and what they do is lower the cost of holding gold. Not pure sentiment.
On structure, 4,000 flipped from yesterday's ceiling to today's floor. 3,919.63 is where this leg started, and it's the second higher low after the 3,875 bottom on Oct 30 - the higher-low pattern is intact. 4,070 is this morning's high; above it, 4,100. Below, 4,030-4,040 is the breakout retest zone.
My own plan: buy the retest at 4,030-4,040, stop below 4,000 (3,995), targets 4,100/4,130, R:R above 2:1. No chasing at market, wait for the pullback.
Risk is on the table: initial claims tonight at 21:30 Beijing (195K expected), NFP tomorrow (65K expected vs 29K prior). Yesterday's ADP came in at 86K, above expectations - private hiring hasn't stalled. If NFP is strong too, rate-hike pricing comes back and gold likely retests below 4,000. That's what the 3,995 stop is for.
Did you catch that 3,919 wick yesterday?
