If you only track one number besides the gold price, make it the US 10-year real yield. It is the closest thing gold has to a "price of money", and for long stretches it has explained more of gold's moves than anything else.

What is a real yield?

A real yield is the interest rate you earn after inflation. The market version comes from Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS): bonds whose principal is adjusted for US inflation. The yield on a 10-year TIPS is the return an investor locks in above inflation for ten years.

You can work out a rough version yourself: nominal 10-year Treasury yield minus expected inflation. If the 10-year Treasury yields 4.3% and the market expects 2.3% inflation, the real yield is about 2.0%.

Why gold usually falls when real yields rise

Gold pays no interest. Holding it means giving up whatever you could earn in a safe, inflation-protected bond. That foregone return is the opportunity cost of gold.

  • Real yields rise: the opportunity cost rises, investors hold less gold, the price tends to fall.
  • Real yields fall: the cost of holding gold falls, demand rises, the price tends to rise.

This is also why a hawkish Federal Reserve tends to weigh on gold. Higher expected policy rates push real yields up. Our guide on trading gold on FOMC days covers how that plays out within a single afternoon.

Where to see the number

  • FRED (the St. Louis Fed's free database) publishes the 10-year TIPS yield under the series DFII10, updated daily.
  • Most charting platforms carry the same series, and some show the 5-year as well.

Put it on a chart beside XAUUSD with the real-yield axis inverted. When the lines move together, the relationship is working. When they separate, something else is driving gold.

When the relationship broke

The link is strong, not permanent. Since 2022, gold has risen to record highs while real yields were also high, which on the old relationship should not have happened. The usual explanations:

  1. Central bank buying. Official buyers increased purchases sharply and do not care about the opportunity cost.
  2. Sanctions and reserve risk. Some reserve managers want an asset that cannot be frozen by another government.
  3. Demand outside the US. Buyers in China, India and elsewhere respond to their own currencies and conditions, not to US real yields.

The practical lesson: real yields still move gold day to day, especially around US data, but they no longer set the long-term level on their own.

How to use real yields in your trading

  1. Before a US data release, ask what a surprise would do to rate expectations. That tells you the likely direction of the first move in gold.
  2. When gold rises while real yields rise, treat it as a sign of strong underlying demand. Sell-offs in that environment are often bought.
  3. When gold falls while real yields fall, something is wrong with the bullish case. Check positioning and the dollar.

Questions traders ask

Is the 10-year or the 2-year more important for gold? The 10-year real yield is the standard measure. Short-dated yields move more on Fed expectations and can lead the 10-year around policy meetings.

Do I need to trade bonds to use this? No. You only need to watch the number and know which way it pushes gold.

Is the correlation reliable enough to trade on its own? No. Use it to understand the backdrop, then trade levels and risk the same way you always do. Size every position with the position size calculator.
