How I Trade Gold Breakouts: A Simple 4-Step Framework

Most beginners try breakout trading first. And fail at it most often. The strategy isn't the problem. The problem is chasing breakouts instead of letting them prove themselves first. After ten years trading gold, here's exactly how I do it on XAUUSD.

The Trap That Gets Everyone

A level breaks. Price rips 200 points in minutes. FOMO hits. You buy. Price reverses instantly and stops you out. That "breakout" was a fakeout — pure liquidity grab to trigger stops before heading the other way. I've fallen for this more times than I care to remember. The fix wasn't quitting breakouts. The fix was building a system to tell real ones from traps.

Step 1: Find the Squeeze

Real breakouts start with compression. I hunt for price consolidating in a tight range on the Daily chart — ideally after a strong trend. The tighter the range and longer it holds, the bigger the eventual move. I draw two horizontal lines: top and bottom of that range. Nothing fancy. Those are my trigger lines.

Step 2: Let the Fakeout Happen

Here's the part that feels wrong: the first move outside the range is usually a trap. I don't enter on that first break. I wait. If price breaks above and instantly reverses back inside, that's a fakeout. I note it. Then I wait for one of two things: - Another break with real momentum (the real breakout) - Or a failure that breaks the opposite side (reversal setup)

Step 3: Enter on the Retest

The real entry isn't when the level breaks. It's when price comes back to retest that level and holds. Say price broke above resistance, then pulls back to that same level — now acting as support. If I see a clean rejection candle on the 4H chart, I'm in. Stop loss: below that retest candle (or below the old range, depending on volatility). Target: measured move of the range projection — just project the range height upward.

Step 4: Let It Breathe

Once the trade's on, I stay off the 1-minute chart. That's where breakouts get scary — all that noise makes you second-guess everything. I check the 4H chart at session boundaries (London open, NY open) and let the trade do its thing. I move my stop to breakeven when price hits 1:1 R:R. Then I let it run to the measured target.

As of early July 2026, gold is compressing between $4,053 support and $4,127 resistance — that's the 38.2% Fib level. This Daily compression fits the setup perfectly. A clean break above $4,127 followed by a retest would be a textbook long with target around $4,200+. A break below $4,053 with retest targets $3,960–$3,945. I'm watching this one right now.
