The $1,800 NFP Friday: What I Got Wrong About the News

L
Lin's Take

Writing this from my desk after the NY close. Real trades, real results, real lessons.

2:28 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2015. Gold at 1,198. I was long two lots, 1:100 leverage, stop twelve dollars away. Nine minutes after the NFP print, my account was down 60% and I was staring at a fill price I never planned for.

The number came in hot. Gold dropped 80 pips in under 15 minutes. My stop filled 30 pips past where I put it.

For ten years I told that story as a cautionary tale about news events. That was the wrong lesson. It took me until my fourth year to see what actually happened.

Here's the data. My stop was $12 from entry. Gold's average 15-minute range on NFP Fridays in 2015 was around $14. I had put my stop inside the noise. Leverage at 1:100 meant every dollar of gold moved $200 of my equity on two lots. The math was already fatal before the number printed. The news just exposed it.

The common explanation is that NFP is dangerous and retail traders should sit out. That's wrong. NFP is not dangerous. It's simply a moment when the spread widens and liquidity thins for about 90 seconds. The market doesn't do anything unusual to you. It just stops hiding the size of your position.

I've traded every NFP for the last six years. I'm in the market at 2:30 p.m. every first Friday. What changed isn't my courage. It's that I stopped sizing positions off what I could afford to lose and started sizing them off what gold actually moves in that window. My average stop on NFP Fridays is now $22. My average lot size is 0.3. My P&L on those days is unremarkable — which is the point.

The $1,800 loss wasn't a news lesson. It was a stop-placement lesson and a leverage lesson, and I only learned it by deleting the story I'd been telling myself. If your stop is inside the average range of the event you're trading, you're not trading that event. You're donating to it.
