I Deleted 5,000 Indicators. One Mistake Still Cost Me 60%.

Lin's Take

Writing this from my desk after the NY close. Real trades, real results, real lessons.

2:47 a.m. Phone buzzing on the nightstand. I figured it was my alarm. It was my broker, writing to tell me, very politely, that most of the money in my account was gone. The position was still open. Maybe I'd like to do something about that.

I was in my twenties. I did the only thing I knew at that hour. I sat on the floor of my bedroom in the dark and watched the price tick against me on a laptop screen, 200 dollars at a time.

Most of my money died in about twenty minutes. Around 60% of the account. On one XAUUSD position I'd been so sure about.

For years I told that story as a leverage story. Too much size, too little margin, stupid kid, learn your lesson. That's the version I'd repeat at dinner. It took me a decade to realize the leverage was never the problem.

Here's what the statement actually said. I had opened 0.8 lots on a $6,200 account. Gold moved against me roughly $24 — about 24 handles — from my entry. At $80 a lot per handle, 0.8 lots meant about $64 a handle. Twenty-four handles. That's $1,536 gone before I'd finished my coffee, still moving. A 25% drawdown on a trade I'd planned to hold for days.

The leverage on that account was 1:100. The margin requirement for 0.8 lots was about $2,400. I had plenty of room. Nothing about the broker's leverage forced me out. I forced me out, because I'd sized the position so that a normal pullback — gold does 24-handle pullbacks on a Tuesday — became a threat to my whole account.

Everyone blamed leverage after 2015. The regulators did too, and they cut retail leverage in Europe and elsewhere. You know what happened? The same traders blew up at 1:30 leverage. Slower, maybe. But the account still went to zero, because the size was still wrong. Leverage is a speed limit. Position size is the car you choose to drive.

I learned that the hard way twice. The second time, in 2017, I was trading 1:30 leverage, feeling very responsible, and still lost 18% in one week — because I kept adding to a losing gold short every 10 handles thinking I was averaging in smartly. Five adds. A 50-handle move. Same disease, different broker.

So I stopped asking what leverage I had and started asking one question before every entry: if this trade goes 30 handles against me tonight while I'm asleep, what percentage of my account is gone? If the answer was more than 2%, I cut the size in half. Then I checked again. My rule now is brutal and boring.

A 30-handle adverse move on XAUUSD costs me no more than 1.5% of the account. That means on my current account, about 0.15 lots per setup, not 0.8. Same conviction. One-eighth the damage.

The 2:47 a.m. email wasn't a leverage warning. It was a position-sizing exam I failed. The market didn't take my money. I handed it over in advance by choosing a size where a normal night's volatility was fatal.

If you take one thing from a stranger on the internet: calculate your lot size from your stop distance and your maximum acceptable loss, never from how confident you feel. Confidence doesn't show up on the statement. Size does.

"I don't predict. I prepare." — Every trade I share here is placed with real money, in real time, during the US session. No indicators, no noise — just price action and experience.

— Happy trading, Lin
