Risk-Reward Ratios for Gold: Why 40% Win Rate Is Enough
Understand R:R for gold trading. Why I focus on R:R over win rate. How to set stops and targets that work with gold volatility.
After 18,000+ trades, this is the method that survived. I use it every US session.
The Only Metric That Matters
Trading alone is hard. I journal my trades as if I am explaining them to another trader. The act of writing forces clarity. Try it.
The Math (Short Version)
After a losing trade, I close the charts and come back the next session. Emotional trading is the fastest way to lose. A day off never hurt anyone.
Where I Put My Stops
I calculate my position size before I look at the chart. That way I am not tempted to adjust my risk based on how good the setup looks. Discipline starts before the trade.
Where I Take Profit
I keep a notebook on my desk. Every trade idea, every lesson, every mistake goes in it. After ten years, I have eight notebooks. They are worth more than my trading account.
Check R:R Before Every Trade
Before I enter any trade, I ask myself: would I show this setup to a mentor? If I hesitate, I do not take the trade. Accountability before execution.
I have been trading XAUUSD for over a decade. Everything in this guide comes from real trades at my desk in Singapore — not from textbooks. Here is what I have learned.

Most new traders obsess over win rate. I did too, at the start. Then I realized something. A 90% win rate means nothing if each loss wipes out five wins. I would rather win 4 out of 10 trades where each win pays 3x the loss. That is how you actually make money. amazing.
Win Rate vs R:R - The Numbers
Here is the cold hard math at different R:R ratios:
- 1:1 R:R Need 50% win rate (break even before costs)
- 1:2 R:R Need 33.4% win rate
- 1:3 R:R Need 25% win rate
- 1:4 R:R Need 20% win rate
With spreads and commissions on gold (typically $6-14 round turn on ECN), add 2-3%. personally, A 1:2 target with 40% win rate is comfortably profitable.
Why Gold Spreads Matter for R:R
This year alone, gold spreads on standard accounts can be 30-50 pips during Asian session. On ECN accounts, spreads drop to 5-15 pips but you pay commission. Here is an example from my trading. angry.
