Gold Trading Terminology: Glossary for Beginners
Complete gold trading glossary. Learn key terms like pip, spread, lot, margin, leverage, swap, ATR, and more. Essential reading for new gold traders.
Most guides on this topic are written by people who have never traded real money. This one is different.
A Quick Note Before You Start
Before I enter any trade, I ask myself: would I show this setup to a mentor? If I hesitate, I do not take the trade. Hesitation is a signal — respect it. Accountability before execution.
Price & Movement Terms
The term "pip" confused me for months. For XAUUSD, one pip is $0.01. That small unit matters when you calculate risk. Every trader should know their pip value before they place a trade.
Position Size Terms
Position sizing is more important than your entry price. I can show you a trade where I entered at the worst possible price but still made money because my position size was correct. Size matters more than timing.
Risk Management Terms
I risk 1% per trade. Not 2%. Not 5%. 1%. It means I can be wrong ten times in a row and still have 90% of my account. I have had five-trade losing streaks survive because of this rule.
Cost & Fee Terms
Commission vs spread: do the full calculation. Some brokers advertise zero commission but have wider spreads. I calculate total cost = (spread × pip value) + commission. That is the real number.
I have been trading XAUUSD for over a decade. Everything in this guide comes from real trades at my desk in Singapore — not from textbooks. Here is what I have learned.

A
well: just last month, I watched a trader - Ask Price: The price at which you buy (go long). Always higher than the bid price. It's honestly terrible. terrible.
- ATR (Average True Range) Volatility indicator showing average price range over a set period. XAUUSD daily ATR typically 500-1,200 pips. Frustrating.
To be honest, - Asian Session: transaction hours 23:00-08:00 GMT. The market will punish careless traders. Typically lowest volatility for XAUUSD.
B
Honestly, to be fair, well: in today's market, - Bid Price: The price at which you sell (go short). Always lower than the ask price. Fantastic.
- Breakout When price moves beyond a support or resistance level with momentum.
