The same variable that carried Friday has now deteriorated twice more. Friday close (+1.47%) was credited to Trump ruling out a pre-midterm strike. Within 24 hours he said he may strike, and then over the weekend the IRGC declared a supertanker exploded after hitting mines in Hormuz while the UKMTO reported a tanker struck by an unidentified projectile as it exited the strait — while the UAE coast guard pulled 22 Asian crew from a separate burning vessel. Three separate maritime incidents in roughly 36 hours. The two reports have not been matched to a common hull, and neither is independently confirmed — but the direction of travel is one-way, and it is the one variable the close was explicitly resting on.

2

Monday has no bond market — and that is the missing price. 10/12 is Columbus Day: US Treasuries are closed for the session, confirmed by two independent calendars. So the single biggest marginal driver of gold will not print a quote on the day the weekend news has to be absorbed. The 61.05-year TIPS real yield at 2.87% — the opportunity-cost hammer behind the metal's drawdown — is frozen exactly when its inputs move most. Monday therefore has to be read off gold itself and off the dollar, not off the curve.

3

Capital is leaving, not waiting. Price rose while the largest ETF redeemed: SPDR gave up 7.98t across Thursday and Friday (1,061.11t → 1,053.13t) while spot added 1.47%. CFTC managed money net long was cut a fifth straight week to 114,820 contracts. And the same pattern is running in risk assets off-hours — Bitcoin fell to $82,958 on Sunday with US spot BTC ETFs shedding $678.9M and ETH ETFs $2,505M over seven days. Friday's equity tape already showed the rotation: utilities +2.78% against industrials −0.88%. This is not dip-buying patience. It is de-risking, and gold was the only macro leg that rose anyway.

01The close rested on one sentence, and the weekend spoke three times

Friday settled 60.93 dollars higher. Since the 00:45 UTC snapshot, three separate maritime incidents have been reported in the same strait — and Monday has no bond market to price them against

Composite public market data, New York settlement 2026-10-09. Low 4130.52, high 4207.44, open 4133.90, close 4193.84 (+1.47%). Sources: 同花顺期货通, Trading Economics, Reuters via Kitco, goldprice.org. Curve is schematic in shape, not tick-level. No additional session data exists for this curve — 10/10 and 10/11 were weekend closures, and US Treasuries are closed Monday 10/12 for Columbus Day, so the next observation window is the Tuesday 10/13 Asia open.

Indexed series, directionally exact. Gold closes 4137.5 / 4121 / 4110.3 / 4131.9 / 4193.8; GLD tonnes 1056.27 / 1059.97 / 1061.11 / 1055.41 / 1053.13. The ETF peaked on 10/07 and redeemed on both sessions gold advanced. No SPDR figure exists for 10/10 or 10/11 — the fund reports on trading days, so the first Monday-confirmed reading will not land before Tuesday evening.

Start with what is uncomfortable. The dollar index closed higher on Friday at 102.216, up 0.08%, and gold still rose 1.47%. Reuters framed the later leg of the move as a softer dollar and lower oil — but that dollar was an intraday condition, not a closing one. So the cleanest reading is that gold was bought through a firm dollar. That rules out the currency view as the explanation and leaves positioning: this was short-covering and bargain-buying, not allocation. Rhona O'Connell of StoneX named it directly — "bargain hunting at the lows, as a floor has been building in the $4,000-region."

Now the part that is new since the morning edition. At 01:33 UTC — forty-eight minutes after the morning snapshot — Hamer Intelligence flagged that Iran had reportedly attacked the Saudi-linked tanker GEM No. 2 in Hormuz while it carried roughly two million barrels, with AIS switched off, and that NASA FIRMS fire detection showed active high-intensity fires at four Saudi Aramco installations after Houthi strikes. Separately, the IRGC declared on Saturday that a violating supertanker exploded after striking mines, and UKMTO logged a separate tanker hit by an unidentified projectile on its way out of the strait. The UAE rescued 22 Asian crew from a burning vessel whose cause was not disclosed.

Treat all of that as single-source and unconfirmed, and still notice what it does to the structure. The IRGC and the UAE have not matched their reports to a common hull; the IRGC describes mines, the UKMTO describes a projectile, and the UAE describes fire of unstated cause. What is not disputed is the count. Three incidents in roughly thirty-six hours against the one the morning edition could cite. That is enough to move the insurance premium and the freight rate, which is where the damage reaches oil prices — not the headline itself. The 2019 Abqaiq precedent says the knee-jerk move on concurrent infrastructure and transit threats runs 5–15% on Brent.

02Seven Fed speakers in four days — and the chair has not met this oil price

Warsh's IMF fireside chat is now dated 10/15 23:30 ET by two calendars. The speaker list around it is the densest of the cycle

The structural point has not moved: the September minutes flagged the inflation driver migrating — tariff effects diminishing while AI infrastructure buildout strengthened — and energy is now re-entering through a different door. Marc Chandler of Bannockburn frames the consequence plainly: a strong CPI pushes hike expectations and long yields higher together. That is precisely the joint move that did the damage to gold over the last eight sessions.

The new element is calendar density. TD Economics and Fundstrat independently list seven Fed speakers between Monday and Thursday, including two that carry votes (Bowman, Barkin) plus Hammack and Waller. Fundstrat reads the cluster as a mechanism rather than noise — their expectation is that FOMC walks back Warsh's "max hawkish" words precisely because so many officials are speaking into the same CPI print. If that is right, the CPI reaction function is collective, not presidential, and a soft print gets absorbed faster than a hawkish chair would allow.

One correction worth carrying. Two widely circulated write-ups quote the 10/09 auction as a "$22bn 30-year at 5.308%." That confuses two auctions: the 39bn 10-year cleared at 5.308% with a 2.77 bid-to-cover, its strongest since 2016, and the $22bn 30-year cleared at 5.618% with a 2.54 bid-to-cover and 72.3% indirect bidding. Both were well received, and both came from the same session that drove yields down 12 basis points at the long end. The 30-year auction is the fact that matters — it is the first evidence in weeks that real money will absorb long duration at these levels.

03FX: the franc was right on Friday, and Monday is its test

USD/CHF fell 0.22% while DXY rose 0.08% — haven demand was expressed in francs, not dollars. With no US bond close on Monday, the FX line is the only clean read available

ParFechamentoVariaçãoPerspectiva Q4
EUR/USD1.1202▼ -0.06%Tradeable this week only through the oil headline. A sustained Hormuz closure pushes EUR/USD toward 1.11 on the terms-of-trade shock plus haven dollar demand. Friday's decline came with the index up, so the euro is not the haven leg here. 17-month low of 1.116 sits just beneath.
GBP/USD1.3241▲ +0.12%The only major that gained on the day. Rate-differential driven rather than haven driven — which makes it the most fragile of the four if Wednesday's CPI surprises hawkishly. UK August GDP lands Thursday and is forecast at −0.1% m/m against +0.4% prior.
USD/JPY158.21▲ +0.22%The pair most exposed in both directions. A US-Iran escalation lifts the haven bid in both USD and JPY, but JPY is the weaker haven while the US curve is steep and December hikes are priced. The 162–164 intervention zone is the tail risk if yen weakness extends.
USD/CAD1.4266▲ +0.29%Oil is the driver and it is one-way. Brent settled $104.72 with steep backwardation, which is CAD-supportive at the margin — yet CAD weakened. If the weekend incidents hold Brent above $104, this pair flips lower rather than higher.
USD/CHF0.8298▼ -0.22%The most informative line on the board, and Monday's only clean verdict. CHF gained 0.22% against the dollar while DXY rose 0.08%. If CHF holds its bid on Monday's open, the market has decided Friday was a warning. If it gives the bid back, the strike language was noise.

The Xinhua closing fix shows the dollar index up 0.08% at 102.216, with EUR/USD down to 1.1202 and USD/JPY up to 158.21 — yet USD/CHF down to 0.8298 from 0.8316. Two haven assets rising together, with the dollar index rising too, is what a tape pricing tail risk rather than direction looks like. Gold +1.47% and CHF +0.22% on the same session is not a coincidence.

Why that matters more tonight than in the morning. Monday has no US Treasury session, so there is no yield print to arbitrate the weekend. In its absence the franc becomes the referee: it is liquid through the weekend's aftermath, it is unambiguously a haven, and it is the one pair that was already voting against the strike rhetoric on Friday. Gold opening higher while CHF gives the bid back would mean the market read the weekend as noise. Gold higher with CHF firm would mean the market is paying up for tail risk — which is the more consequential outcome, because it puts real demand behind the rebound instead of short-covering.

04Fundamentals: the physical market is tightening while the financial market leaves

Gulf export throughput running 42% below the pre-war baseline against an ETF and leveraged book that both stepped away — and almost no spare tanker capacity to respond

多Caso estrutural altista7 pontos
  • Gulf crude exports averaged 9.90 mb/d over the seven sessions to Wednesday per Kpler — 42% below the pre-war baseline
  • Freight and insurance are repricing the barrel, not the headline: war-risk surcharges require 7-day advance notice and exclude transits within 30 nautical miles of the Iranian coast
  • Charter economics are extreme — Gibson reports a single US→China crude voyage leased at $80M; crew hazard base pay has reached $100,000 with $50,000 completion bonuses
  • Global commercial crude inventories are below 6.0 billion barrels, leaving OPEC members almost no reserve buffer against a renewed infrastructure hit
  • Aramco's East-West pipeline is restored to 5.8 mb/d against a 7.0 nameplate and has confirmed 100% of November European allocations after zeroing October — but its Yanbu terminal sits inside the Houthi strike envelope
  • PBoC added 740,000 oz (~23 t) in September — the 23rd consecutive month of accumulation, and the largest since buying resumed
  • Reuters poll consensus for the 2026 record high sits at $4,746.50, implying the median forecaster still expects a retest well above spot
空Caso estrutural baixista7 pontos
  • Three maritime incidents in roughly 36 hours in the strait the Friday close was explicitly priced on — none independently confirmed, and none matched to a common hull
  • SPR drawn 132.46M barrels to 282.98M; the policy buffer against an energy spike is largely spent
  • Managed money net long cut for a fifth straight week to 114,820 contracts, with open interest down 14,341 to 527,641
  • SPDR redeemed 7.98t across the two sessions gold advanced — price up, largest vehicle shrinking
  • Risk-asset ETF flows are negative too: spot BTC ETFs −$678.9M and ETH ETFs −$2,505M over seven days, against +$241.1M the prior week
  • Real yields at 2.87% on the 61-year TIPS curve remain the marginal driver, and Fed funds still price a higher policy rate into next year
  • Gold is still roughly 4% lower year-to-date and about 22% below the January closing record — the drawdown has not reversed

The Reuters analyst poll puts the 2026 record-high consensus at <strong>$4,746.50</strong>, about 13.2% above Friday's official close. Dispersion below is severe and unevenly sourced — treat the single-source entries as indicative only, not as tradeable levels. No credible desk has published a fresh target since the morning edition; the table is carried forward unchanged and explicitly dated.

Read the spread, not the level. The same bank appears at $6,000 and $4,500 in this table because the underlying figures are single-sourced and mutually inconsistent — that is a data-quality signal in its own right. The only cross-verified anchor remains the Reuters poll at $4,746.50. Two revision signals matter more than any absolute target: HSBC cut its 2026 average to $4,490, and J.P. Morgan's $4,500 year-end call sits below the Reuters consensus. Bullishness is being priced against a lower entry, not above spot. Nothing on this table changed over the weekend. Do not read stability here as conviction — it is an absence of news.

05Key levels — and the session where the levels cannot be checked against rates

Friday's high is the first line. Monday trades it without a Treasury close.

TipoNívelBase e significado
Resistência forte4207 / 4235Friday's high 4207.44. Independent desk work converges on the same cluster: <b>4226.53</b> as the second shelf and <b>4266</b> as the medium-term ceiling. Clearing it needs a new driver — the weekend strikes are a risk, not a driver.
Meio da faixa4165 – 4220Multiple independent desks name <b>4165–4170</b> as the first support and <b>4217–4220</b> as the cap on any continuation. This band is where the weekend gets tested.
Suporte forte4110 / 4066The 10/07 close of 4110.3 and the 4066.21 intraday low from October 7 — the weakest gold has printed since August 5. Also the secondary line beneath the broader <b>4105–4145</b> base that has held on every revisit.
Suporte forte4100 / 40004100 is now explicitly the <b>bull-bear dividing line</b> in desk commentary, with <b>4070–4000</b> as the next acceptance band beneath. Heavy long concentration sits at 4000 — an effective break triggers stop cascades.
Suporte T+D904.20 / 900Shanghai T+D settled 904.20, +1.40%. Holding the 900 round number keeps the domestic channel bid into CPI week.
  • Monday has no US Treasury session — plan around it10/12 is Columbus Day and Treasuries are closed, confirmed by TD Economics and Morningstar independently. The 2.87% real-yield anchor will not print while the weekend's three maritime incidents are being absorbed. Practical consequence: gaps and intraday moves on Monday carry less confirmation than they would on a normal day, because the rate channel cannot validate or contradict them. Size accordingly and treat the first clean hour as unconfirmed.
  • CHF is Monday's only clean refereeUSD/CHF fell 0.22% on Friday while DXY rose 0.08% — the haven bid went to francs. With no bond close, that pair carries the verdict. CHF firm on the open plus gold firm = the market is paying for tail risk, which is the outcome that puts real demand behind the rebound. Gold firm with CHF giving the bid back = the strike language was noise and 4,100 gets tested on positioning alone.
  • Are the three vessels one vessel? The IRGC describes mines; UKMTO describes a projectile; the UAE describes fire of unstated cause and rescued 22 Asian crew. Two reports are explicitly unconfirmed by independent verification and neither crew nor hull has been publicly identified. Watch whether Monday produces a matched account. Three separate hulls is an escalation; one misreported hull is a communications problem. That distinction is worth more than the headline count.
  • Freight and insurance, not the headlineWar-risk underwriters now require 7-day advance notice for Hormuz voyages and exclude transits within 30 nautical miles of the Iranian coast. Gibson reports a single US→China crude voyage leased at $80M, crew hazard pay at $100,000 base plus a $50,000 completion bonus. This is where the damage reaches the barrel — and it reprices on Monday even if no further vessel is struck.
  • September CPI — Wednesday 10/14, 8:30 ETConsensus is +0.6% m/m and 3.6% y/y headline with core at 2.5%, against 3.4% prior. Barclays is at 0.58% / 3.7% and Morgan Stanley at 0.62% / 3.69% — both above consensus on the headline. Note the internal split: headline is expected to accelerate while core is expected to <em>decelerate</em> to 0.2% m/m. Whether the increase is concentrated in energy decides whether it matters. The <b>Beige Book lands 14:00 ET the same day</b>, two hours later.
  • PPI, retail sales and claims all at 08:30 ET ThursdayThe heaviest single release window of the week. PPI +0.5% m/m expected against +0.4%; retail sales +0.3% against +1.1–1.2% prior; core PPI +0.3%. Empire manufacturing is forecast at −7.6 and Philly Fed at 26.5 against 37.8. Four inflation-and-demand prints landing together means Warsh's 23:30 ET fireside chat that night is reading a fully updated board.
  • Seven Fed speakers, one chairHammack Monday 12:10 ET, Waller Tuesday 03:45, Collins Tuesday 16:00, Bowman and Barkin Wednesday, Hammack Thursday, and Warsh Thursday 23:30 at the IMF fireside chat with Georgieva — dated 10/15 by both TD Economics and Fundstrat. Fundstrat expects the cluster to force the FOMC to walk back the chair's "max hawkish" framing. Two of these carry votes.
  • First SPDR reading of the week lands Tuesday eveningThe fund reports on trading days only, so there is no 10/10 or 10/11 figure and Monday's will not arrive before Tuesday evening. That leaves a 48-hour blind spot on the one series showing the clearest divergence from price. Two consecutive sessions of redemption into strength is the pattern to confirm or break.
  • Positioning is not going to help a breakoutManaged money net long has been cut for a fifth straight week to 114,820 contracts. A book in reduction will not chase a move through 4,207 — which makes a clean break harder to sustain than price action alone suggests. Crypto is corroborating the withdrawal: spot BTC ETFs −$678.9M and ETH ETFs −$2,505M over seven days, against +$241.1M the prior week.

Metodologia:Evening edition covering 10/11 00:45–10:00 UTC, layered on the 10/09 New York settlement. Because 10/10 and 10/11 were weekend closures and US Treasuries are closed Monday 10/12 for Columbus Day, no new session close exists — this edition reports no invented prices and moves nothing forward. Spot gold is carried at 4,193.84 after a four-source cross-check (同花顺期货通 4,193.84 · Trading Economics OTC 4,193.87 · Reuters 4,194.36 · goldprice.org 4,194.65), a spread under $0.85, superseding the 4,194.65 used in the morning edition. The Brent settlement remains genuinely contested: 新华财经 reports 104.72 (+0.42%) and Region Alert concurs, while Finobird reports 103.24 (−0.3%) and MarketsFN 103.02. The 104.72 figure is carried with the conflict left visible — no single value is presented as settled fact. Weekend maritime incidents (IRGC mine strike on the GEM No. 2, the UKMTO projectile report, the UAE rescue of 22 crew, the Aramco fire detections) are all single-source or unconfirmed and are labelled as such inline; IRGC, UKMTO and UAE accounts have not been matched to a common hull and are treated as three unverified reports, not three confirmed events. FedWatch December odds are stated as the CME close distribution (~81.3%) with Reuters' intraday 83–84% noted separately. Positioning is the CFTC disaggregated report as of October 6 and is not mixed with the futures-only variant. The widely circulated '$22bn 30-year at 5.308%' line is identified and corrected: 5.308% belongs to the $39bn 10-year auction; the 30-year cleared at 5.618%. No new desk target was published over the weekend and the targets table is carried forward with that absence stated explicitly rather than presented as unchanged conviction.
