TerbitCakupan Week open - 10/09 NY settlement + weekend tapeOlehTRDE Research010203

Tiga benang merah hari ini

1

The weekend's biggest risk headlines produced the smallest gold response. A tanker struck a mine and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz with 22 crew rescued, the US hit a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman, and flows through the strait fell to about 8.5mn bpd, some 40% below normal. Spot opened 4195.24 and was trading near 4186 by the Asian afternoon — below Friday's 4194.65 settle. That is not a small reaction to a large event. It is the eighth consecutive time this cycle that a geopolitical premium has been offered to gold and not taken.

2

The Fed's independence problem now has a date on the calendar. Trump signed a memorandum on October 7 convening a committee to investigate mortgage-fraud allegations against Governor Cook, with a closed White House hearing set for November 5. Reuters and AP describe it as the first attempt by any president to remove a sitting Fed governor in the institution's 110-year history. The Supreme Court blocked the effort on June 29 without settling the underlying question. A Fed under siege with a new hawkish chair has more reason to hike to reassert credibility — the credibility trade runs against gold in the short run and toward it in the long run.

3

The floor is heavily defended and the ceiling is not being attacked. Managed money net long fell for a fifth straight week to 110,987 contracts, and SPDR Gold Trust shed 2.28t to 1053.13t on a day gold rose 1.47%. Yet December options show the crowd paying far more for protection than for upside: a 4,569-lot put wall at the 4000 strike against a largest call of 1,541 lots at 4200. Meanwhile the PBoC added 23t in September — a 23rd straight month and the largest monthly gain of this cycle.

01Price action: a haven bid that stopped working

The week recovered 1.3% off a two-month low, then handed the entire geopolitical premium back on Monday morning

The gold line is actual daily closes. The 10Y line is schematic between 10/05 and 10/07 because public wire services carry the Treasury curve only from 10/08; the 10/08 and 10/09 prints are actual at 5.227% and 5.242%. The point of the chart is not the level but the break: on 10/09 the 2Y led yields higher by 3.5bp, the curve bear-flattened, and gold still settled 0.5% off its high. Gold traded through the bond market rather than with it.

The single most useful fact in this edition is a non-event. Over the weekend a tanker was struck by a mine and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz with 22 people rescued, the US struck a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman, and crude moving through the strait reportedly fell to about 8.5mn bpd. Spot gold opened at 4195.24 and was near 4186 by the Asian afternoon. Gold has now declined or failed to hold on eight consecutive geopolitical headlines this cycle. When a premium is offered eight times and not taken, the premium is not the variable. The variable is the discount rate.

That discount rate is the real story of this week. The US 10Y closed Friday at 5.242% with the 2Y up 3.5bp — a bear-flattening — and the 30Y at 5.598%. The reported 10Y term premium has reached roughly 0.98%, the highest since 2014. Term premium is the compensation a lender demands for locking money up for a decade. When that is at a ten-year high, a non-yielding asset has to be paid more to be held, and the marginal buyer recalculates. StoneX's Rhona O'Connell put the other side plainly: the market has priced a further Fed hike and continued official-sector buying, and absent a black swan she does not see gold breaking convincingly higher.

What Friday actually was. Not a haven bid. The 30-year auction cleared at 5.618% with a 2.54 bid-to-cover and indirect bidders taking 72.3% against a 68.6% average — genuinely firm. Gold rallied the day yields stopped rising at the long end. Then on Monday the geopolitical news arrived, oil-relevant risk rose, and gold gave the move back. Different driver, opposite outcome, same week. That is the cleanest available evidence that at 4200 gold is a rates trade wearing a haven costume, and that whoever is buying here is a valuation buyer at 4000, not a fear buyer at 4200.

02The Fed: a rate path and an institutional crisis, running in parallel

October is priced as a pause. The November 5 Cook hearing is not priced at all.

October meeting — hike probability17.7%
0%50%100%
December meeting — cumulative hike probability81.3%
0%50%100%

The rate path is genuinely two-sided and the December number is drifting, not fixed. CME FedWatch as of Friday's close put October at 82.3% hold, and December at 18.7% hold, 67.6% for +25bp and 13.7% for +50bp — an 81.3% cumulative probability of a hike by December, roughly 1.7 points below the 83% carried in the previous edition. Several outlets round this differently, to 78%, 81% or 84%, depending on the hour they sampled. The direction is what matters: December is still the base case, but it is no longer a certainty, and the softness in the September payrolls plus Michigan sentiment at 46.3 is the reason.

Now the part nobody is trading. The White House memorandum of October 7 sets a November 5 closed hearing on whether mortgage-fraud allegations against Governor Lisa Cook justify her removal. Cook is a hawk who voted for the September hike; removing her would leave a vacancy on a seven-member Board. The Supreme Court's June ruling blocked the attempt without resolving the question, so this is a live institutional contest with a scheduled date. Read one way it is corrosive to the dollar and to Treasuries — the assets that price Fed credibility. Read the other way it strengthens the case for hiking, because a chair who lets himself be undercut has more incentive to defend the policy rate. Both readings are defensible, which is precisely why the reaction function of Chair Warsh matters more than any single CPI print this week. The market is currently pricing none of it.

Transmission to gold, in order of importance this week: the institutional channel is slow and structural — it shows up in reserve-diversification surveys, not in Tuesday's bid. The fast channel is still the rate path, and it runs through Wednesday's CPI. Note the asymmetry the Fed itself created: the September minutes said the current rate is "not restrictive," and core PCE is still running near 3.0% against a 2% target. If core CPI prints at or above 0.3% month-on-month, the December hike becomes the base case rather than the priced one, real yields rise, and the marginal buyer at 4200 disappears.

03FX: the dollar rose, and nothing responded to it

The CFTC positioning is the tell — speculators are short the franc, the pound and the euro, and long only the yen

PasanganPenutupanPerubahanProspek Q4 & alasan
EUR/USD1.1202▼ -0.06%CFTC speculators hold a net short of 99,332 contracts in the euro — among the largest in the complex. The dollar's Friday gain came without euro capitulation, which is a weaker dollar signal than the index implies.
GBP/USD1.3241▲ +0.12%Net short 97,611 contracts. The structural risk is domestic, not directional: Chancellor Reeves' first budget on October 28, with markets watching whether bank taxation rises. Long-term gilt yields have already reached highs since the 1990s.
USD/JPY158.21▲ +0.22%The yen is the only major currency carrying a speculative net long, at 62,325 contracts. That is the one genuine non-dollar long in the complex and the most under-owned haven position going into a week with a live geopolitical tape.
USD/CAD1.4266▲ +0.29%WTI settled 91.85 and Brent 104.72, both higher — the conflict from the prior edition is now resolved upward. A sustained move through 95 would strengthen CAD terms of trade but invites the verbal intervention that has been repeatedly threatened.
USD/CHF0.8298▼ -0.22%Speculators are net short 23,740 contracts of francs while gold rallies and a tanker burns in Hormuz. When the haven currency is sold into the haven metal, the haven bid is not being expressed in FX at all — which is consistent with the gold failure this morning.

The dollar index rose 0.08% to 102.216 on Friday, a third consecutive weekly gain, and on the surface that should have pressured gold. It did not. The reason is in the cross-rates rather than the index: the dollar gained almost nothing against the euro and lost ground against the Swiss franc. A dollar index that rises because the basket is short non-dollar positions, rather than because the dollar is being bought, is a much weaker signal for gold than the headline suggests.

The positioning data is the more honest read. For the week to October 6, speculators carried net shorts of 99,332 euro, 97,611 pound and 23,740 franc contracts against a 62,325-contract net long in the yen — the yen being the only major currency the funds are actually long. That distribution tells you two things. First, the crowded trade in this complex is short the majors, which means dollar strength is partly a positioning artefact and therefore reversible. Second, the one place a genuine haven bid still lives in FX is the yen — which is a warning for USD/JPY longs at 158.21 rather than a comfort, given the live Iran tape and an October 28 UK budget on the other side of the month.

04Fundamentals: the bid is official, the flows are not

Official sector demand sets the floor. ETF and futures money sets the ceiling. They are pointing in opposite directions.

  • The PBoC added 23t in September — a 23rd consecutive month and the largest single monthly gain of this cycle, taking official reserves to 2,410t, roughly 9% of total reserves against a global central bank average near 27%
  • Poland has bought 98t year-to-date to 648t and has a stated 700t target — about 52t of committed remaining demand
  • WGC: reported official net buying was 39t in August and 170t year-to-date; Q2 net purchases of 289t were a record for any second quarter on record
  • 89% of central banks expect global official holdings to keep rising and a record 45% plan to raise their own — diversification, not inflation hedging
  • A UBS survey finds 65% of reserve managers now cite diversification as their primary reason for holding gold, ahead of inflation protection
  • December options show a 4,569-lot put wall at 4000 against a largest call of 1,541 lots at 4200 — the crowd is paying for the floor, not attacking the ceiling
  • Gold at 4186 is 22.4% below the January 29 record close of 5,405.00 and down about 4% year-to-date

  • Managed money net long fell for a fifth consecutive week to 110,987 contracts; the legacy futures-only series shows non-commercial net long at 114,820, down 9,599
  • SPDR Gold Trust fell 2.28t to 1053.13t on Friday and 2.57t on the week — money left on a day gold rose 1.47%
  • The US 10Y term premium is reported at roughly 0.98%, the highest since 2014 — the carrying cost of a non-yielding asset is at a decade high
  • December still carries an 81.3% cumulative hike probability and the Fed's own minutes call the current rate "not restrictive"
  • September was the Fed's first hike since 2023, and core PCE is still near 3.0% against a 2% target
  • Oil above $90 with Hormuz flows reportedly 40% below normal feeds directly into Wednesday's CPI
  • Q2 global mine production was a record for any second quarter (WGC) — supply is expanding while the price is flat

The five desks with a verifiable year-end-2026 anchor cluster around <b>$4,900</b>, about 17% above Monday's Asian level. Note the calibre problem: HSBC's $4,490 is a full-year <em>average</em>, not a year-end target, and Wells Fargo is quoted as a <em>range</em>. Both are included for direction only and neither should be compared like-for-like with a December mark. The genuine dispersion is between the $5,000-plus structural bulls and the desks who still mark gold below spot.

Three targets on this list are not clean comparisons, and the discrepancies are the information. (1) Goldman is quoted at both $4,900 and $4,650 by different outlets for the same year-end horizon — we use $4,900 because two independent outlets carry it and it is consistent with the published $4,650 being an older vintage, but the conflict is unresolved and not reconciled. (2) A widely-republished figure of $6,000 by end-2026 for J.P. Morgan could not be matched to a primary source and directly contradicts the $4,500 rangebound view carried in the previous edition, so it is excluded rather than repeated. (3) HSBC's figure is a full-year average and Wells Fargo's is a range — both are directional only. The one thing the verified set agrees on: $5,000 is the medium-term street consensus, and the disagreement is entirely about timing. UBS explicitly frames a pullback toward $4,000 as an opportunity to add, not a thesis change — and HSBC's model treats $4,000 as the level at which official buying becomes materially more responsive, not as a psychological line.

05Key levels and the week ahead

Monday's Asia range is narrower than Friday's whole day. Wednesday decides it.

JenisLevelDasar dan implikasi
Resistance kuat4207 / 4259The 100-day SMA sits near <b>4259.87</b>, with the 50-day at 4334.80 and the 200-day at 4529.19 — all three overhead. Price has been rejected twice in the 4207-4227 band. Clearing 4259 requires a new driver, and the geopolitical tape has just demonstrated it will not supply one on its own.
Tengah range4165 – 4202The range that formed after Friday's break. Monday's 4186 sits in the <b>upper half</b> of it. Single-source technicals — carried as a reference band, not as a signal.
Support kuat4100 / 4066<b>4066.30</b> is the two-month low set Wednesday and the level that defines the rebound. Below it, the next shelf is the <b>4000</b> round number — which is also where the December put open interest is heaviest at 4,569 lots, and where HSBC's model expects official buying to become materially more responsive.
Support T+D900The SGE round number. Au99.99 opened Monday at <b>907.00</b>. A sustained loss of 900 puts the entire domestic complex back into its August range.
Support T+D887.17Friday's Au(T+D) low on the exchange record. Below this the domestic bid has failed and the Shanghai premium to London becomes a liability rather than support.
  • The haven bid has failed eight times — what would change thatThis is the thing to hold onto going into Wednesday. Gold declined on or failed to hold eight consecutive geopolitical headlines this cycle, including a mine strike and a US strike on a merchant vessel over the weekend. The re-rating trigger is not better news, it is cheaper carry: a 10Y back below 5.15% with the term premium off its ten-year high. Until then, treat rallies as positioning.
  • Wednesday September CPI, 8:30 ET — the whole weekConsensus is <b>3.6-3.7% year-on-year headline</b>, up from 3.4%, with core near <b>2.4-2.5%</b>. The Cleveland Fed nowcast has headline up 0.53% month-on-month but core only 0.20%. The gap is gasoline: AAA's September average of <b>$4.33 a gallon</b> was a record for the month, and in August gasoline alone accounted for over a third of the monthly rise. <b>Core at 0.3% or above reopens the hike debate</b> — that is the number that matters, not the headline. The Beige Book follows at 14:00 ET the same day.
  • Thursday is the dense daySeptember PPI and retail sales both land on <b>October 15</b>, completing the inflation picture. TSMC's quarterly call is the same day and is the cleanest read on whether AI capital spending is still accelerating — which matters because the Fed's own minutes identified the AI buildout, not tariffs, as the source of structurally rising inflation.
  • Six large banks: four Tuesday, two WednesdayJPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report <b>October 13</b>; Morgan Stanley and Bank of America on <b>October 14</b>. S&P 500 earnings are expected up more than 30% year-on-year for Q3. The KBW bank index is already about <b>13% below its August high</b>, so the sector has partially priced a yield problem. Watch the Fed commentary in the prepared remarks, not the numbers.
  • November 5: the Cook hearing is not in any priceThe White House committee will hold a closed hearing on whether mortgage-fraud allegations against Governor Cook justify her removal, with written statements due November 10. This is the first presidential attempt to remove a sitting Fed governor in the institution's history, and the Supreme Court has already declined to settle it. <b>Structural, not tactical</b> — but it is the mechanism by which the diversification case for gold eventually gets paid.
  • Iran still has not answeredForeign Minister Araghchi said Tehran is reviewing Washington's response to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, with a reply expected <b>within days</b>. Israel Channel 13 reported Trump and Netanyahu have been in frequent urgent contact about a possible renewed strike, and the Kremlin confirmed Putin has passed Iranian ideas to Trump. The market has now priced the good version of this — gold gave the premium back on Monday. <b>A negative reply is the asymmetry that matters.</b>
  • European sovereign stress is a second, quieter channelThe European Court of Auditors flagged in its 2025 annual report that EU debt has reached about <b>€740bn</b> and could approach <b>€1trn by 2027</b>. French sovereign bonds have been unusually volatile this week. If that broadens, it competes with Treasuries for the same safe-haven capital — which is bearish for the long end and, through term premium, for gold.
  • The 4,569-lot wall at December 4000December put open interest at the 4000 strike is <b>4,569 lots</b>, against 2,425 at 4200 and 3,334 at 4300. The largest call is 1,541 lots at 4200. The options market is paying roughly three times as much for a strike 4% below spot as for the strike at spot. That is a hedged, defended floor — and it means the asymmetry into CPI is <b>downside-protected rather than upside-energised</b>.
  • Watch the managed-money streak, not the priceManaged money net long has now fallen for five consecutive weeks to 110,987 contracts, and the legacy series shows 114,820 non-commercial net long, down 9,599. CreakRats' three-year percentile shows managed money longs at <b>127,101</b>, the <b>17.9th percentile</b>, and shorts at 16,114, the 9.6th — historically low on both sides. A market that is neither long nor short is a market that will take direction from the next macro print. That print is Wednesday.

Three unresolved conflicts are disclosed rather than smoothed. The spread is under $1 and is a settlement-versus-snapshot convention, not a data conflict. (2) Goldman's year-end target appears as both $4,900 and $4,650 across outlets for the same horizon; $4,900 is used and the conflict is left visible. A widely-republished $6,000 year-end figure for J.P. Morgan could not be matched to a primary source and is excluded. (3) The Hormuz export figure of roughly 8.5mn bpd, the 10Y term premium of 0.98%, and the European sovereign stress observation each trace to a single Chinese-language aggregator and are labelled as such. CFTC data is reported on the disaggregated futures-and-options basis unless explicitly stated; the legacy futures-only series is shown alongside and the two are never mixed in one series. The oil settlement conflict flagged in the previous edition is now resolved: WTI 91.85 and Brent 104.72, both higher, confirmed by two independent sources.
