Step-by-step guide to verifying gold broker regulation across FCA, ASIC, CySEC, BAPPEBTI, and SVG FSA. Learn how to check licenses, avoid clone firms, and protect your trading capital.

Regulation is the single most important factor in broker safety. A regulated broker must segregate client funds, maintain minimum capital requirements, submit to audits, and provide dispute resolution. Unregulated or falsely regulated brokers have no such obligations. Verifying regulation is the first step before depositing any money.
Look at the broker's website footer for regulatory information. Legitimate brokers clearly display: the full name of the regulator(s), the license/registration number, and the legal entity name. Take a screenshot. If this information is hidden or vague, consider it a major red flag.
Go directly to the regulator's official website — do not click links on the broker's site. Bookmark these official registers: FCA (register.fca.org.uk), ASIC (connectonline.asic.gov.au), CySEC (registry.cysec.gr), BAPPEBTI (bappebti.go.id), SVG FSA (svgfsa.gov.vc). Search using the broker's license number or legal entity name.
On the regulator register, verify: the license status is 'Authorised' or equivalent, the permissions cover dealing in 'Contracts for Difference' or 'Derivatives', and there are no restrictions or suspensions. Also check the register for any warnings, disciplinary history, or enforcement actions against the firm.
Clone firms are fraudulent entities using a real authorized firm's details. On the FCA register, use the 'Warning List' feature. On ASIC, search for similar names. Compare the broker's contact details (website, email, phone) with what the register shows — discrepancies indicate a clone.
Additional verification: call the phone number on the regulator register (not the broker's number), check that the registered address matches the broker's claimed office location, look up the broker on financial forums and review sites, check if the broker appears on any regulator warning lists.
Many brokers have multiple entities for different regions. For example: FCA entity for UK clients, CySEC entity for EU clients, and an offshore entity (SVG or similar) for rest-of-world clients. Verify which entity handles your account and ensure that entity is properly regulated. Your protection depends on the entity holding your funds, not the broker group's best license.
Regulation is not static. Set a calendar reminder every 3-6 months to re-verify your broker's license status. Subscribe to regulator newsletters for enforcement updates. If a broker loses its license or receives restrictions while you have funds deposited, withdraw immediately. Regulators regularly update their registers with new warnings.
