The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is the UK's financial regulatory body. It oversees forex and CFD brokers operating in the UK, ensuring they meet strict standards for client fund segregation, transparent pricing, and fair treatment of customers.
An FCA-regulated broker must keep client funds in segregated accounts, participate in the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) which covers up to £85,000 per person, and follow strict leverage limits (maximum 1:30 for retail clients under ESMA rules).
Every FCA-regulated firm has a Firm Reference Number (FRN). Search the FCA Register at register.fca.org.uk. Enter the FRN or firm name. Check the register for any restrictions, warnings, or disciplinary actions. Also confirm the firm's status is 'Authorised' and the permissions match the services offered.
FCA is considered a tier-1 regulator alongside ASIC (Australia) and CySEC (Cyprus — for EU passported firms). The FCA has stricter leverage limits than offshore regulators (like SVG FSA), but offers the strongest investor protection. Some brokers hold FCA license for their UK clients but offer different conditions for non-UK clients under other licenses.
Retail clients under FCA regulation face: maximum 1:30 leverage on major forex (gold CFDs may vary up to 1:20), negative balance protection, no bonus or inducement offers, mandatory risk warnings, and cooling-off periods. Professional clients can access higher leverage but lose FSCS protection.
Some brokers falsely claim FCA regulation. Check the FCA register directly — do not trust the broker's website alone. Look for clone firms (fraudulent copies of real FCA firms). The FCA maintains a warning list of unauthorized firms. If a broker pressures you to deposit quickly or promises guaranteed returns, it's almost certainly a scam regardless of claimed regulation.
FCA regulation gives you recourse if something goes wrong. Complaints go through the broker's internal process, then to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The FSCS pays out if the broker goes insolvent. These protections mean FCA brokers typically have slightly higher costs than offshore alternatives, but the safety net is worth it for most traders.
